Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews, Anthony Stolarz Out Injured Now
UPDATE: The Toronto Maple Leafs face a critical setback as both star centre Auston Matthews and No. 1 goaltender Anthony Stolarz are sidelined due to injuries, just confirmed ahead of their home game against the Los Angeles Kings on November 13, 2025.
This is a significant blow for the struggling Maple Leafs, who currently sit at 8-8-1 and have lost three straight games. As the team grapples with these injuries, the urgency to turn their season around intensifies.
Head coach Craig Berube revealed that Matthews will be out for “maybe a week, maybe sooner” due to a lower-body injury sustained during Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to the Boston Bruins. The captain was hit from behind by Nikita Zadorov and left the game in the second period. Berube indicated the injury occurred earlier in the match, raising concerns about Matthews’ ongoing health.
Meanwhile, Stolarz, who exited after the first period against Boston, is classified as day-to-day with an upper-body issue. This season, he has struggled, posting a 6-5-1 record, a .884 save percentage, and a 3.51 goals-against average (GAA). His recent performances have fallen short of last year’s standard, where he excelled with a 21-8-3 record and a .926 save percentage.
In light of these injuries, third-string goaltender Dennis Hildeby will start against the Kings. The team has also recalled Artur Akhtyamov from the AHL to serve as backup. In another setback, centre Scott Laughton has been placed on injured reserve after being injured in the same game against Zadorov.
The Maple Leafs, once viewed as strong contenders for the Stanley Cup, are now struggling defensively, allowing a league-worst 3.82 goals per game. This is a stark contrast to last season’s defensive prowess, where they allowed only 2.79 goals per game.
As the Leafs aim to regain their footing, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring how the team adapts to these injuries. The immediate concern is whether they can secure a crucial win against the Kings while missing key players. Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
