Matthew Schaefer Shines as Islanders Training Camp Kicks Off
UPDATE: The New York Islanders have officially kicked off their training camp, and all eyes are on 18-year-old Matthew Schaefer, the first overall pick in the recent draft. Just announced today, Schaefer is already making waves on the ice, paired with veteran defenseman Scott Mayfield and soaking up invaluable advice from head coach and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy.
Schaefer’s determination to secure a spot on the roster is evident, as he embraces the rookie experience, currently situated in the auxiliary locker room. “Yeah, 100%, I think everyone’s looking to earn that big spot in the locker room with the guys,” Schaefer remarked, showcasing his eagerness to integrate with his teammates ahead of the season opener on October 8, 2024, against Pittsburgh.
Roy, who previously coached Nathan MacKinnon during his own rookie season, is committed to nurturing Schaefer’s development. He emphasizes starting small while providing opportunities for increased ice time. “He’s a quality person,” Roy stated, noting Schaefer’s strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
The young player is not only earning recognition from his coaches but also his fellow teammates. Casey Cizikas, a fourth-liner for the Islanders, praised Schaefer’s professionalism and dedication: “He had a good rookie camp leading up to this. First day on ice went well, and now we just got to keep moving forward with each day.”
Schaefer is already receiving guidance from seasoned players like Anders Lee, Bo Horvat, Mathew Barzal, and Kyle Palmieri. Their support will be crucial as he aims to transition successfully into the NHL. “I want to see from his perspective what he thinks I need to work on,” Schaefer explained, highlighting his desire for constructive feedback.
As the camp progresses, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Schaefer will continue to develop his skills and adapt to the professional level. With a promising start, there’s a strong possibility that he will make his NHL debut in just a few weeks.
