Metro-Area Mayors Urge Public Input on New Transit System

UPDATE: A coalition of communities along Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula is actively pursuing the creation of a new public transit system, and they need your input NOW. Mayors from the municipalities of Torbay, Bauline, Flatrock, Bell Island, Pouch Cove, Portugal Cove–St. Philip’s, and Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove have initiated a feasibility study aimed at connecting their communities more effectively.
Torbay Mayor Craig Scott emphasized the urgency of community feedback, stating, “It’s crucial that we understand exactly what type of system that our residents need.” This initiative follows a historical interest among residents for public transit options, which had previously stalled due to financial constraints when considering integration with the existing Metrobus system serving areas like St. John’s and Mount Pearl.
The mayors are not just asking for opinions; they are urging residents to participate in an online survey, available at local town offices, to gauge interest and desired routes. Public information sessions are also being planned to discuss the project further. “The stronger the case we have from residents, the more likely that this will move forward quickly,” Scott noted.
This proposed transit system aims to enhance connectivity, facilitating easier movement between communities and linking to the larger Metrobus network. The mayors believe that a collaborative effort is essential for the project’s success.
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on what they would be willing to pay for such a service, as this will significantly influence the project’s direction and timeline. Scott pointed out that this initiative is not primarily about facilitating daily commutes to work but about fostering community connections.
As this project develops, the mayors are committed to ensuring that public preferences shape the outcome. The response from residents will be pivotal in determining the feasibility and speed of implementing the new transit system.
Engagement is essential; make your voice heard and participate in the survey to help shape this vital community service. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story that could transform transportation on the Avalon Peninsula.
