Metro Vancouver Opens Largest Indoor Pickleball Facility NOW
UPDATE: Metro Vancouver has just launched its largest indoor pickleball facility at the former Sears location in North Vancouver’s Capilano Mall. Opened today, October 13, 2023, the facility boasts 15 colorful courts across a massive 60,000 square feet, marking a significant addition to the region’s recreational landscape.
Officials from Ontario-based Fairgrounds confirmed that the decision to occupy this prime space was driven by the need for accessible indoor play options. “We try to go where the people are, and malls are a good example of the original community hub,” stated Carr Norton, head of programming for Fairgrounds Capilano. This strategic move aims to cater to the growing demand for pickleball in the area, as residents previously faced long travels for indoor courts.
The excitement surrounding the opening is palpable. Sam Goode, head coach at Fairgrounds Capilano, expressed, “The feedback has just been unbelievable. People are so excited to play.” Local retailers have already reported a surge in foot traffic, showcasing the positive impact this facility is having on the community.
Retail analyst David Ian Gray highlighted the facility’s relevance in revitalizing vacant mall spaces. “It’s a very aligned concept to fit those spaces, because there’s no big pent-up demand for large footprint traditional retail anymore,” he explained. The facility not only fills a gap in recreational options but also enhances the mall’s appeal to shoppers.
Fairgrounds has ambitious plans for expansion, with Norton indicating potential openings of two to four new locations in the greater Vancouver area within the next year. “For us, it really was laying down the courts, repainting the walls, putting in the retail space,” he noted, emphasizing the simplicity of transforming the former department store.
Pickleball enthusiasts like Maureen Lum are thrilled about the new venue. “At first, I couldn’t believe it. Little North Vancouver getting its own 15 courts,” she exclaimed. The opening brings her closer to the sport she loves, eliminating the need for lengthy drives to find indoor play.
As the community embraces this new facility, the implications are significant. Not only does it cater to the local demand for indoor sports, but it also offers a fresh solution for malls seeking to attract customers amidst changing retail landscapes.
With the facility now officially open, players can purchase memberships or pay for individual court times, ensuring everyone has the chance to enjoy this exciting new space. The buzz is unmistakable, and as word spreads, the Fairgrounds Capilano is poised to become a central hub for pickleball in Metro Vancouver.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and watch for the anticipated expansion of Fairgrounds facilities across the region.
