UPDATE: A military helicopter is currently circling above Ottawa as part of an exciting Family Day event hosted by the Department of National Defence (DND). This annual event, taking place today, October 14, 2023, allows family members of employees at the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) to experience flights on a CH-146 Griffon Helicopter.

The DND confirms that the flights began at 9:40 a.m. and will continue until 3:30 p.m. today. “This annual morale event is one of the ways the DND recognizes the invaluable support provided by family members to Canadian Armed Forces personnel and civilian employees,” a DND spokesperson stated.

These flights not only serve to uplift the spirits of families but also allow Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) pilots to maintain their flight proficiency and fulfill mandatory flight hours for their licenses.

Local residents and visitors may notice increased noise levels as helicopters take off and land throughout the day. The DND advises the public to expect brief periods of heightened sound during these operations.

The AETE plays a critical role in conducting various flight tests and evaluations on military aircraft, involving both military and civilian personnel.

As this event continues, families are experiencing a unique opportunity to connect with the military community while enjoying the thrill of a helicopter ride. Stay tuned for more updates as the day progresses!
