Montreal Launches Urgent Project to Combat Youth Homelessness

BREAKING: A groundbreaking initiative to combat youth homelessness in Montreal has just been announced, aiming to provide essential housing and support to vulnerable young people. The project, named Agora Déclic, will serve as a comprehensive resource center, integrating housing, education, and psychosocial support under one roof, akin to a university campus.

The focus of Agora Déclic is on young individuals who age out of Quebec’s youth protection system (DPJ), with approximately 2,000 youths transitioning out each year. Benoit Bernier, co-founder of the project, emphasizes the urgent need for such a facility, stating, “We need to recognize that these young people are living with complex trauma, and that’s likely where the core issue lies.” He describes the initiative as a “game-changer” for at-risk youth.

The facility will feature 145 housing units, primarily accommodating students, with an anticipated average stay of about three years. The first cohort of residents is set to move in by 2028. Current statistics reveal that only about one-third of youth who grow up in care graduate from high school by age 21, highlighting the critical need for support systems like Agora Déclic.

The impact of this project is underscored by the personal testimony of Smay-Lee Dubé, who faced significant challenges after aging out of the system. “You feel alone in the world,” Dubé recalled of her struggles, adding that she often didn’t know where she would sleep or find her next meal. With the assistance of similar programs, Dubé obtained her high school diploma at age 26 and is now preparing to attend university—making her the first in her family to do so.

Dubé passionately advocates for initiatives like Agora Déclic, stating, “A project like this has to exist. It’s essential.” Her story illustrates how integrated support can transform lives, providing stability and reducing the risk of homelessness for vulnerable youth.
