Montreal Police Arrest 28-Year-Old for Death Threats to Jewish Man
UPDATE: Montreal police have arrested a 28-year-old man after he allegedly made death threats against a member of the Jewish community. The incident unfolded around 4:40 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Saint-Laurent borough, prompting multiple 911 calls from concerned citizens.
Witnesses reported that the suspect hurled “threats and hateful remarks” at a group, including a Jewish individual. A video circulating on social media captures part of the confrontation, where the suspect can be heard shouting, “we will kill you” and “you f-cking pig.” The situation escalated quickly, leading to police intervention.
Upon arriving at the intersection of Fraser and Saint-Louis streets, officers swiftly located the suspect and took him into custody after interviewing witnesses. Caroline Chevrefils, a spokesperson for Montreal police, confirmed the arrest and noted that the suspect would face a virtual court appearance on Saturday from a detention center.
In light of the incident, the police’s hate crime unit has been notified. It remains to be seen if the Crown prosecution office will file charges against the suspect.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) expressed relief over the prompt police action. In a statement, they emphasized, “Those who seek to threaten members of our community must be held accountable. If you see something, say something.”
This alarming event follows a recent attack where a Jewish father was assaulted in a park while with his children, an incident that also garnered significant media attention and was captured on video. A suspect in that case is currently facing charges.
As the situation develops, authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. The swift response from law enforcement highlights the importance of addressing hate crimes and protecting vulnerable communities. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story.
