Mooseheads Suffer Heavy Defeat to Chicoutimi, Fall to 13-7-1-1
BREAKING: The Halifax Mooseheads faced a devastating defeat against the league-leading Chicoutimi Saguenéens, losing 8-3 in a match that highlighted their struggles. The game, held earlier today, saw the Mooseheads drop to a record of 13-7-1-1 this season.
The Mooseheads struck first at 6:27 in the first period, with Oleg Kulebiakin netting his 17th goal of the season with a sharp-angled shot past Chicoutimi goaltender Raphaël Précourt. However, the Saguenéens quickly regained control, with Jacob Gomez and Émile Guité scoring to take a commanding lead.
Tensions escalated when Daniel Walters received a five-minute major and game misconduct at 16:52 for a kicking motion, leading to a power-play goal by Peteris Bulans. The Mooseheads also faced a setback as forward Mathieu Taillefer left the game after a knee-on-knee collision, raising concerns about his health.
In the second period, the Mooseheads showed some fight when Amelio Santini and Liam Kilfoil scored to momentarily tie the game. Santini found the net while shorthanded, and Kilfoil tipped in a shot from Shawn Carrier during a power play. However, Chicoutimi responded with goals from Maxim Massé and Emmanuel Vermette, restoring their two-goal lead heading into the final frame.
The Saguenéens continued to dominate in the third period, with goals from Christophe Berthelot, Alexandre Desmarais, Emil Ricard, and Vermette, sealing the Mooseheads’ fate with an emphatic score.
In a standout performance, Massé earned the first star of the game with a goal and an assist, followed closely by Vermette, who secured the second star with two goals and two assists. Gomez rounded out the top three with a goal.
Looking ahead, the Mooseheads will need to regroup as they continue their road trip on November 28 against the Newfoundland Regiment. Fans can catch all the action live on 95.7 NewsRadio at 6:30 p.m. with Garreth MacDonald.
This lopsided loss underscores the Mooseheads’ need for improvement as they strive to remain competitive in the league. Stay tuned for further updates as the season progresses.
