Morris Community High School Launches Jazz Age “Romeo and Juliet”
UPDATE: Morris Community High School is set to thrill audiences with its innovative adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet: A Jazz Age Love Story,” premiering tonight at 7 p.m. on October 23. This fresh take on Shakespeare’s classic transports the beloved tale to the roaring 1920s, a time of jazz, flappers, and prohibition, creating an engaging and vibrant experience for theatergoers.
The excitement is palpable as students prepare to perform at the high school located in Morris, Illinois. The play’s unique setting is designed to resonate with modern audiences while honoring the timeless themes of love and conflict. Student actors Sarah Chrisman and Kylie Overbeck, who portray the Nurse and Benvolio, shared their enthusiasm, stating, “It’s such a fun vibe. The prohibition era has a lot of gangs, which correlates well with ‘Romeo and Juliet.’”
Director Andrea Gustafson emphasized that the adaptation is not only about the story but also about immersing the audience in the 1920s culture. “We’ve adapted it to be ‘20s speak, and it’s as much a deep dive into the 1920s as it is Shakespeare,” Gustafson noted. The play features a blend of traditional jazz music and modern tunes infused with jazz elements, ensuring that the audience is both entertained and engaged.
The opening night is just the beginning, with additional performances scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 25 and 2 p.m. on October 26. This adaptation has taken months of preparation, and Gustafson believes the audience will appreciate the unique twist on Shakespeare’s work. “One of the cool things about Shakespeare is how relevant his stories, themes, and characters still are today,” she said.
The cast and crew of Morris Community High School are eager to showcase their hard work and creativity, making this a must-see event in the community. With an adaptation that includes 1920s slang and a playful approach to the dialogue, the production promises to deliver laughs and poignant moments alike.
As the curtain rises tonight, attendees can expect an unforgettable evening that honors the legacy of Shakespeare while celebrating the vibrant spirit of the Jazz Age. Don’t miss your chance to experience “Romeo and Juliet: A Jazz Age Love Story” at Morris Community High School!
