UPDATE: Morris sophomore golfer Braden Wickkiser has just been named the Grundy County Athlete of the Week, following a stunning performance where he shot a season-best round of 36 in a match against Sycamore. Wickkiser’s impressive score earned him 130 votes, narrowly surpassing Sydney Larson from Coal City volleyball with 118 votes, and Nolan Skedel from Minooka soccer, who received 91 votes.

The weekly voting, which takes place online through X (formerly Twitter) at @roboesterle, closes every Tuesday at midday, making this recognition timely and significant for local athletes.

In a recent Q&A, Wickkiser expressed his passion for golf, noting, “I have played golf since I was four or five years old, but I didn’t start getting serious about it until the last three or four years.” In addition to golf, he plays baseball and has a versatile role on the team. However, he admits, “Golf is probably my favorite sport.”

Wickkiser attributes his success on the course to his strong short game and putting skills. “I have gotten pretty good at putting, and that really saves strokes,” he said. To hone his skills, he practices regularly at home with his putting greens.

When asked about his pre-match routine, Wickkiser revealed, “I usually go to the putting green and hit a few 1- or 2-foot putts. I like to see the ball go in the hole so it gives me some confidence and helps me relax.”

His favorite course? Medinah, where he enjoyed an unforgettable experience thanks to a member’s invitation. Wickkiser has clear goals for the upcoming season; he aims to qualify for state after falling short last year. “I qualified for sectionals last year, but I didn’t play my best that day. I would like to qualify for state this year,” he stated.

Outside of sports, Wickkiser enjoys English class, stating he loves both writing and reading comprehension. Additionally, he shared his fondness for local food, saying, “I always like to get a Pam’s corn dog. Taco Burrito King is good, too.”

This recognition not only highlights Wickkiser’s athletic achievements but also showcases the vibrant sports culture in Grundy County. As he prepares for the regional competitions ahead, all eyes will be on him to see if he can achieve his goal of reaching state this year.
