Morris Seals Last-Minute Victory Over Wilmington, 27-20

UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, the Morris football team clinched a dramatic 27-20 victory over Wilmington just seconds before the final whistle on September 15, 2023. With only 22 seconds left on the clock and trailing by 1, Morris executed a crucial play that left fans on the edge of their seats.
After a false start pushed the team back to the 6-yard line, Morris lined up in a Wildcat formation. Quarterback Mick Smith took the snap and handed off to wide receiver Quaid Phillips, who dashed around the end for the game-winning touchdown. “When I turned at the end of the line, I saw one of my guys had made a block for me,” Phillips said after the game. “I knew then that I was going to be able to get in.”
Morris coach Alan Thorson expressed mixed emotions post-game. Though his team squandered leads of 13-0 and 19-7, they demonstrated resilience by scoring the decisive touchdown after falling behind 20-19 with just over four minutes remaining. “We put together an outstanding two-minute drill,” said Thorson, praising a 35-yard pass from senior quarterback Brady Varner to Phillips that set up the final score.
The game started with Morris dominating early, building a lead thanks to a fourth-down touchdown reception by Caedan Curran and a rushing touchdown from Keegan Kjellesvik. Wilmington’s Ryan Kettman quickly responded with an explosive 80-yard touchdown run, igniting hope for the Wildcats.
Despite Morris extending their lead to 19-7 with a touchdown pass from Varner to his brother Bryce, Wilmington found their rhythm and controlled the clock, executing a ground-and-pound strategy that frustrated Morris throughout the game.
“They just drained the clock,” Varner admitted, noting that Wilmington’s tactics limited his team’s offensive opportunities. Wilmington coach Jeff Reents commented on the intensity of the match, stating that both teams’ contrasting styles created a unique dynamic. “I think we were both frustrated,” he said. “But I’m proud of our kids for coming into a hostile environment and playing a great game.”
With the victory, Morris will focus on refining their game, especially addressing penalties that hindered their performance. “They are an excellent program,” Thorson said, emphasizing the need for improvement. Curran was a standout performer, rushing for 124 yards on 23 carries, while Varner threw for 147 yards and ran for 83 yards.
This exhilarating matchup not only showcased the skills of both teams but also highlighted the human spirit of determination and teamwork. As the season progresses, fans will be eager to see how Morris builds on this thrilling victory.
