Motorcyclists Converge for 1,000-Mile Ride Supporting Cancer Awareness

A group of motorcycle enthusiasts from Greater Sudbury embarked on a significant journey on the morning of March 15, 2024, to raise funds and awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. This unique event, known as the 1,000-Mile Ride Challenge, marks the first of its kind in the region.
Organized by Dave Beauparlant and his wife, Crystal Beauparlant, the ride stems from a personal battle; Dave was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2023. Despite facing health challenges, he expressed a commitment to merge his passion for motorcycling with a cause that resonates deeply with him.
“A thousand-mile ride is not an easy challenge, but cancer at the end of the day gets in the way of anything,” said Dave. He highlighted the need for greater awareness of leukemia, particularly in northern Ontario, where he feels it is often overshadowed by more populous urban areas. The journey aims to not only raise funds but to shine a light on this critical issue.
Setting off from The Rock Harley Davidson dealership in Greater Sudbury, the group plans to travel to the Terry Fox Memorial in Thunder Bay and return to Sault Ste. Marie early Saturday morning. The entire journey is expected to cover approximately 1,000 miles and take around 18 hours to complete.
Ben Beauparlant, Dave’s son, acknowledged the challenges ahead. “It’s going to be hard, but no matter what, we’re going to do it. We’re going to come out on top,” he stated in an interview with CTV News. He underscored the physical demands of riding for extended periods and the necessity of maintaining balance on the motorcycle.
To support the riders, a chase truck has been provisioned with snacks, drinks, and fuel, ensuring that participants can focus on the ride without the worry of running out of gas. Steve Beauparlant, Dave’s cousin, volunteered to drive the chase vehicle, emphasizing the importance of community in this effort. “It’s nice that I can be here able to support and even if I can’t ride a bike, well, it doesn’t mean I can’t be there with the truck and fuel and everything else,” he said.
As of now, the inaugural event has successfully raised over $14,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. The Beauparlant family envisions this ride becoming an annual tradition, fostering greater awareness and support for those affected by leukemia and lymphoma in northern Ontario.
This initiative showcases not only the spirit of community involvement but also a relentless dedication to fighting against cancer, drawing attention to a cause that remains vital.
