Multi-Million Dollar Roadster Wins Best in Show at Cobble Beach

BREAKING: A meticulously restored 1938 Steyr 220 Roadster has just claimed the prestigious Best in Show award at the 11th Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Ontario. Peter Boyle, the proud owner from Oil City, Pennsylvania, showcased this rare beauty, one of only three known to exist, among a stunning display of approximately 120 vehicles on September 17, 2023.
The event unfolded under the radiant sun along the picturesque Georgian Bay, drawing dozens of car enthusiasts eager to witness automotive excellence. Boyle’s cream and black cherry-painted roadster, complete with custom luggage, stood out as the centerpiece of the competition. This marks his third victory at the Cobble Beach Concours, solidifying his reputation in the classic car community.
The Concours d’Elegance featured 21 classes, rewarding excellence across various automotive eras. Notably, Vern Smith of Swift Current, Newfoundland, took home the award for Best Post-War Car with his striking 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. Meanwhile, the Best Pre-War Car accolade went to a stunning 1932 Duesenberg Model J, owned by William Miller of Frankfort, Indiana.
Boyle’s Steyr 220 is a marvel of engineering, showcasing technology that was revolutionary for its time. With a full, floating rear axle and a wet-sleeve all-aluminum engine, this vehicle is a testament to automotive artistry, described by Boyle as a “rolling sculpture.” He acquired the car after it was shipped from New Zealand in 2010 and underwent extensive restoration, ensuring every detail—from the chassis to the wood framing—was perfect.
“This car was pretty rough when I got it, but now it’s a piece of art,” Boyle stated, celebrating his win with champagne and heartfelt congratulations from fellow attendees. The event not only highlighted the beauty of classic cars but also served as a fundraising effort for the Sunnybrook Foundation and Brightshores Health System Owen Sound Foundation.
The festivities began on September 15 with the Tour d’Elegance, where about 70 cars took a scenic drive through the local area, showcasing automotive history. Additionally, the weekend featured a range of activities, including seminars on the history of Formula 1 racing and the unveiling of the Porsche Experience Centre Toronto.
As the weekend wrapped up, the vibrant atmosphere and community spirit were palpable, making this year’s Concours d’Elegance a memorable celebration of automotive history. The excitement continues to build as car enthusiasts eagerly await the next showcase of innovative designs and classic beauty.
Stay tuned for more updates and full lists of award winners, as this year’s event has set a high standard for the future of car shows.
