UPDATE: In a nail-biting showdown, Naperville North clinched a dramatic 21-14 overtime victory against Libertyville on September 8, 2023, in Libertyville. The Huskies executed crucial plays in the final moments, with JD Sanford delivering a pivotal sack to seal the win.

With just 27 seconds left in regulation, Libertyville’s Brady Buenik led a fierce comeback, rushing for a 4-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14. However, it was Naperville North’s running back William Eloe who emerged as the hero, scoring the go-ahead touchdown from 10 yards out on the first play of overtime.

In a decisive goal-line stand, the Huskies’ defense, led by Gabriel Hill, prepared to stop Buenik, who had been a formidable force throughout the game. “We knew he was drawing up the middle to the strong side, and our job was just to fill the gaps,” Hill stated, emphasizing the teamwork that led to their success.

Eloe’s determination was evident as he charged toward the end zone for the winning score. “I smelled the end zone and I was going to run over everything I saw until I got there,” he said, highlighting the intensity of the moment. Eloe finished the game with 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Josiah Nothacker contributed 104 passing yards.

The Wildcats struggled offensively, especially in the second half, but coach Tim Budge made a strategic move by bringing Buenik back into the game for the final drive. “We just wanted to get a little more running,” Budge explained. Despite the loss, he acknowledged the competitive nature of the matchup, stating, “It was the game I expected, just we fell on the short end.”

Naperville North’s coach Sean Drendel expressed confidence in his team’s ability to manage tight games. “We have to stop the run and we have to be able to run the football,” he said, reflecting on the performance that led to their victory.

Looking ahead, Naperville North will host Metea Valley next week, while Libertyville prepares to face Stevenson at home. This thrilling overtime victory sets the stage for an exciting season ahead, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what comes next.
