National Guard Armed in DC Amid Crime Crackdown by Trump

BREAKING: The National Guard in Washington DC will be armed as part of an urgent crime crackdown announced by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. This decision comes as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to combat what has been described as “out of control” crime in the capital.
Earlier this month, Trump deployed approximately 2,000 troops to Washington, changing course from a previous Pentagon statement that these forces would remain unarmed. The Pentagon confirmed today that National Guard personnel will soon be equipped with their service-issued weapons, raising questions about the evolving nature of their mission.
Local officials, including Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, have expressed concerns over this federal intervention, as polls indicate widespread opposition among residents. A recent survey revealed that nearly 80% of Washingtonians disapprove of the deployment of federal officers and the National Guard, as well as the takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department.
In a press briefing at the White House, Trump touted the crackdown’s success, claiming it has brought “total safety” back to DC, which he labeled a “hellhole” prior to the military presence. He stated, “If I think we’re in great shape here, that’s one thing. But if I don’t, I’m just going to say it’s a national emergency,” hinting at plans to extend the deployment beyond the current 30-day limit if necessary.
Since the operation commenced, over 700 arrests have been made, including 40 arrests just yesterday, and authorities have seized 91 illegal firearms. Despite these figures, local leaders like Bowser argue that crime is at a 30-year low in terms of violent incidents, challenging the need for increased federal presence.
In response to the ongoing situation, Trump has also proposed asking Congress for $2 billion to help beautify Washington, following significant budget cuts earlier this year amounting to $1.1 billion.
As the situation continues to develop, all eyes will remain on the actions of the National Guard and local authorities, as well as the potential implications for other cities, including Chicago, which Trump has indicated could be next in line for similar measures.
