Neighbors Extinguish Lumby Brush Fire in Urgent Rescue Effort
URGENT UPDATE: Quick-thinking neighbors in rural Lumby successfully extinguished a brush fire that ignited this morning, preventing a potential disaster. The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. on August 1, in a pump house located near Headgates Road. Thanks to the immediate action of local residents, the flames were contained before they could spread further into the dry wildlands.
Authorities confirm that the fire posed a significant danger, with the potential to engulf surrounding forests. Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton stated, “Fortunately enough the neighbors got together and got on it right away with shovels and buckets of water until we got there, which really kind of kept it at bay.”
By the time the Lumby Fire Department arrived, the fire was no longer spreading due to the proactive intervention of the community. Firefighters deployed their bush truck to manage the remaining flames, with assistance from BC Wildfire, who dispatched a helicopter to the scene, although it was ultimately not needed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials report it is not considered suspicious. The swift response from neighbors not only protected their properties but also showcased the power of community action in times of crisis.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dry conditions prevalent in the area, increasing the risk of wildfires. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately. As the situation develops, officials will continue to monitor the area closely.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and how local communities are working together to ensure safety during these challenging conditions.
