Netsilik Candidates Push Urgent Call for More Housing Options

UPDATE: In a thrilling turn of events, three candidates vying for the MLA position in Netsilik, which includes Taloyoak and Kugaaruk, have launched an urgent call for increased community housing options. With the election just around the corner, candidates are clamoring for immediate action on housing, a pressing issue for residents.
Incumbent MLA Joseph Inagayuk Quqqiaq emphasized housing as a cornerstone of his re-election campaign. “There’s a lot of bills that need to be amended to fill the gaps,” Quqqiaq said. “Barriers are there. The policies, it’s time for changes.” His commitment to breaking down these obstacles reflects the community’s desperate need for solutions.
Candidate Cecile Nelvana Lyall, meanwhile, is advocating for local municipalities to build their capacity to maintain essential services. “We are seeing housing being built, but we also need to support the municipality to ensure they have enough garage space and water and sewer trucks,” she stated, highlighting a multifaceted approach to the housing crisis.
Former MLA Emiliano Qirngnuq is leveraging his extensive experience in hamlet governance to argue for a robust legislative response. “I’ve had the opportunity and honor working with members of the legislative assembly. I am confident we can make a difference in the 7th Assembly,” Qirngnuq said, positioning himself as a candidate with proven leadership.
With the election looming, Quqqiaq expressed a strong desire to represent both the oldest and youngest members of the Netsilik community. “I want to be the voice for the Elders and the youth,” he asserted, demonstrating a commitment to a diverse constituency.
Lyall echoed similar sentiments, adding that food security is another critical area of concern. “Food security, especially among our most vulnerable populations, like children and Elders,” she emphasized, showcasing the candidates’ understanding of the community’s broader needs.
As residents prepare to cast their votes, advanced polling will take place from October 13 to 23 at the Boothia Inn from noon to 7 p.m.. The main election day is set for October 27, with voting at the Community Hall from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Notably, candidate Mary Anaumiq Neeveacheak has withdrawn from the race due to administrative issues, yet remains listed as a candidate. Additionally, candidate Johnny Qilluniq has not responded to inquiries from Nunavut News, raising questions about his campaign.
As this electoral race heats up, the candidates’ focus on essential issues like housing and food security is resonating with a community eager for change. With voting days fast approaching, the urgency for solutions has never been more palpable. Stay tuned for further developments as Netsilik heads to the polls.
