New Brunswick Day: Key Stores Closed, Attractions Open Now
URGENT UPDATE: As New Brunswick Day approaches on August 7, 2023, residents should prepare for significant changes in store hours and public services across the province. Most major retail and grocery stores will be closed, but many summer attractions remain open, offering a variety of activities for families.
WHAT’S CLOSED: On this holiday, Walmart, Sobeys, and Atlantic Superstore locations will not operate. Various Shoppers Drug Mart locations may also close, with some having reduced hours based on their specific areas. Notably, all N.B. Liquor stores, including popular shopping centers like Regent Mall in Fredericton, McAllister Place in Saint John, and Champlain Place in Dieppe, will be closed for the day.
Public transit will be impacted, with Saint John Transit, Codiac Transpo in Moncton, and Fredericton Transit suspending services. Additionally, all city halls and public libraries will remain closed, including Service New Brunswick offices.
WHAT’S OPEN: Despite the closures, several attractions are welcoming visitors. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton will be open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., while the Fredericton Region Museum operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Magnetic Hill Zoo invites visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Kings Landing offers free admission on this holiday. The Fundy Discovery Aquarium in Saint Andrews is also open for a fun-filled day.
COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS: In Doaktown, official New Brunswick Day celebrations kick off at 12 p.m. at Doaktown Community Park. Residents in Saint John can enjoy a spectacular fireworks display over Lower Cove, scheduled for 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, with a rain date set for Monday at the same time.
Other festivities include live music and food trucks at Youghall Beach Park in Bathurst from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., while Shediac features games and barbecues from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.. Quispamsis will host events at the Arts and Culture Park from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Residents are encouraged to check local listings for specific store hours and event details. With much of New Brunswick bustling with activities despite closures, this New Brunswick Day promises to be a day of community spirit and celebration.
