New Food Bank Launches in Kugluktuk, Distributes Over 200 Bags
UPDATE: A new emergency food bank has just opened in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, providing immediate relief to families facing severe food shortages. On its inaugural day, over 200 bags filled with essential groceries were distributed, showcasing the urgent need for this critical service.
Residents expressed their relief and gratitude. “There was a lot of hungry people, and I feel sorry for them — but I’m happy it’s here,” said Millie Hatogina, a local community member, emphasizing the dire circumstances many families face. This hamlet-led initiative aims to combat the rampant food insecurity affecting nearly 60 percent of Nunavut households, the highest rate in Canada according to Statistics Canada.
The food bank comes as a response to escalating food challenges, with John McCafferty, Assistant Senior Administrative Officer, noting the lack of job opportunities in the area. Many residents rely on traditional hunting and fishing to sustain themselves. “It’s a tough situation,” he added.
Funding for the food bank has been bolstered by the Inuit Child First Initiative, which provided over $900,000 for a food voucher program that ended in March. While individual requests for food support are still allowed, approvals have reportedly been rare. “That money had helped with food security in the community,” McCafferty stated. “It helped to feed the children, making sure they aren’t going to bed hungry.”
Food Banks Canada is supporting the initiative by donating supplies, with additional items purchased through local suppliers. The food bank offers crucial grocery items including flour, sugar, milk, and has a freezer to store meat, ensuring families have access to a variety of foods.
Residents like Corey Niptanatiak highlighted the pressing need for this service. “We have so many growing families and students running around at night with no food,” he remarked, underscoring the emotional impact of food insecurity in the community.
Kugluktuk’s food bank will operate weekly, every Wednesday, at the community’s youth center. Local leaders hope this will provide consistent support for families struggling to make ends meet. “I hope that people have enough to sustain through the weeks to feed their families,” said Kyle Chmelyk, one of the project organizers.
Residents are optimistic about the food bank’s potential. “It feels good on the heart to see people having food again… in their homes,” said Michelle Hikhaitok, a local resident, expressing a shared hope for the initiative’s success.
With food prices soaring—some items like juice costing between $30 to $32—the need for the food bank is more pressing than ever. As Presley Aklok noted, “I think it’s good that the community gives here and there, when it’s hard to get by.”
As Kugluktuk’s new food bank begins its operations, community members are eager to witness its impact on alleviating hunger and food insecurity in the region. The opening signifies not just a logistical achievement but a beacon of hope for many in the community.
