Newcomer Networking Nights Launch Tonight at 6 Surrey Schools
URGENT UPDATE: Newcomer families in Surrey are invited to attend the inaugural Newcomer Networking Nights (NNN) starting tonight, September 11, 2023, at Guildford Park Secondary (10707 146 St.) at 5:30 p.m.. These weekly sessions aim to assist immigrants, refugees, and new families in adjusting to life in Surrey and White Rock.
Organized by the Surrey Schools Welcome Centre, these sessions create a “supportive, engaging, and empowering environment” for families to learn about essential school routines, available services, and support options. The Welcome Centre emphasizes the importance of community integration, stating, “We are committed to assisting all newcomer and ELL students with their transition to Surrey Schools,” as highlighted on their official website.
Starting with networking and registration at 5:30 p.m., the event will feature presentations and Q&A sessions from 6 to 8 p.m.. Topics covered include transitioning to life in Canada, digital literacy, online safety, personal hygiene, social connections, and volunteering opportunities. This is an invaluable chance for parents and students to network with others in the community, fostering relationships that can ease their transition.
The NNN continues with five additional sessions on the following dates:
– September 18 at Princess Margaret Secondary (12870 72 Ave.)
– September 25 at École Kwantlen Park Secondary (10441 132 St.)
– October 2 at Grandview Heights Secondary (16987 25 Ave.)
– October 9 at Johnston Heights Secondary (15350 99 Ave.)
– October 16 at Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd.)
These events are open to families with children in early learning, elementary, or secondary schools, allowing participants to attend any session, as the information presented remains consistent.
In collaboration with English language learner (ELL) teachers, the sessions will be delivered by multilingual settlement workers and multicultural workers from Surrey Schools. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to supporting new families as they navigate their educational journeys.
