Newfoundland Woman Creates Nativity Shed Amid Wildfire Threat
UPDATE: In a remarkable act of creativity and resilience, Maureen Doyle-Gillingham has transformed her shed in Ochre Pit Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, into a breathtaking sanctuary filled with over 1,200 nativity scenes. This unique display comes as the region recently faced devastating wildfires threatening homes and livelihoods, but her nativity shed emerged unscathed.
Doyle-Gillingham’s journey began over three decades ago when she first started collecting nativity scenes, a passion ignited by her childhood visits to the Corpus Christi church in Northern Bay. “If he can have his shed, I can have a nativity shed,” she told CBC News earlier this month, highlighting the therapeutic nature of her hobby.
Each piece in her collection tells a story, with no two nativity scenes alike. The shed, now a treasure trove of cultural and spiritual significance, features items from around the globe, showcasing her commitment to preserving the Christmas story in a personal way.
The recent wildfires in Conception Bay North posed a significant threat to her property. Doyle-Gillingham recounted the tense days, stating, “It was like a smokehouse. It took me about three or four days to get the smoke out.” Despite the challenges, the nativity shed remained untouched, a testament to her faith and dedication.
As she reflects on the emotional toll of the summer’s events, Doyle-Gillingham shared, “I sat down and cried. I don’t know if I cried because our house was saved, or because the shore was destroyed.” Her story resonates deeply, highlighting not just her love for nativity scenes, but also the resilience of a community facing adversity.
For those interested in experiencing this extraordinary collection, a video tour offers a glimpse into the shed, revealing the stunning array of nativity scenes that celebrate the spirit of Christmas.
