Nipawin Hawks Surge to First Place in UPL Division with Dominant Win
UPDATE: The Nipawin Hawks have surged to the top of the UPL Division following a decisive 6-1 victory over the Warman Wolverines on October 10, 2023. This victory marks a significant moment for the Hawks, who now share the lead with the Flin Flon Bombers, both teams sitting at 12 points. However, Nipawin holds the top spot with a superior record of 6-1-0-0.
The Hawks’ recent triumph was a showcase of skill and teamwork. After leading 1-0 at the end of the first period, the Hawks exploded for three more goals in the second, making it 4-0 before sealing the game in the final period. Star player Konnor Watson netted a hat trick, while Will Whitter, Carter Anderson, and Ashton Tait contributed to the scoreline. Whitter’s impressive penalty shot goal further highlighted the team’s dominance.
In contrast, the Wolverines struggled to find their footing, with Cam Sarna scoring the only goal for Warman. The Hawks’ goalie, Gage Roberts, showcased his talent with 31 saves, ensuring the team maintained a comfortable lead.
Earlier in the week, the Hawks also triumphed in a nail-biting 4-3 shootout against the La Ronge Ice Wolves on October 7. This win set the stage for their commanding performance against Warman. Eric Hoiness scored the decisive goal in the shootout, further solidifying the Hawks’ momentum.
As the UPL Division standings shape up, the Melfort Mustangs trail the Hawks and Bombers with a record of 4-3-0-1 for a total of 9 points. The La Ronge Ice Wolves currently occupy the fourth spot with 7 points from a record of 2-5-2-1.
Looking ahead, the Hawks will face the Bombers in a highly anticipated matchup on October 14, which could further impact the standings. The Mustangs, after a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Estevan Bruins on October 11, will aim to rebound against the Yorkton Terriers on October 17.
The Ice Wolves, meanwhile, are set to play the Humboldt Broncos on October 17 after a mixed performance in Kindersley. Fans are eagerly awaiting these matchups, as the intensity of competition in the UPL Division continues to rise.
Stay tuned for live updates as the Hawks’ remarkable season unfolds and the battle for the top spot intensifies.
