Nominations Open NOW for Haig-Brown Environmental Awards

URGENT UPDATE: Nominations are officially OPEN for the Haig-Brown Environmental Stewardship Awards, recognizing exceptional individuals, youth, and organizations dedicated to environmental preservation and innovation across the region. This year’s awards spotlight efforts not only in Campbell River but also extend to Port Hardy and the Discovery Islands, creating a broader platform for environmental advocates.
“We really wanted to draw attention to all the outstanding work happening not just in Campbell River, but across the region,” says Shane Pollard, Guardian Manager for the We Wai Kai First Nation and committee member. He emphasizes that these awards serve as a vital platform for sharing knowledge and inspiring others in the community.
From now until September 15, 2023, the public is encouraged to submit nominations in seven impactful categories, including:
– **Air Quality / Alternative Transportation:** Honoring initiatives that reduce emissions and promote cleaner transport options.
– **Pesticide-Free / Urban Agriculture:** Recognizing sustainable food practices that advance pesticide-free growing.
– **Water / Energy Conservation:** Celebrating projects that save water or enhance energy efficiency.
– **Habitat Protection / Creation:** Acknowledging efforts to protect and restore native plant and wildlife habitats.
– **Waste Reduction:** Rewarding innovative strategies to reduce, reuse, or recycle waste.
– **Youth Special Recognition:** Highlighting young leaders making significant environmental contributions.
– **Environmental Excellence:** Celebrating individuals or groups making broad, long-term impacts.
This year, nominations are welcomed from a wider area, including Quadra Island and other surrounding regions. Each nomination presents a chance for individuals, groups, businesses, and development projects to shine.
Winners will be celebrated on September 28, 2023, at the historic Haig-Brown House along the banks of the Campbell River. The awards ceremony is part of the Haig-Brown Festival and World Rivers Day celebrations, promising a day filled with live music, nature and history programs, local food vendors, and community spirit.
