UPDATE: In an unexpected turn of events, Nora Vedress has been named Prince Albert’s 2025 Citizen of the Year during a surprise ceremony held at Calvary United Church on Tuesday afternoon. Just moments after providing support to those affected by the recent fire at the Salvation Army, Vedress was honored by representatives from the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club and Prince Albert Daily Herald.

The announcement took place shortly after 1:00 PM, as Vedress believed she was attending a routine meeting about year-end finances. “I was just shocked,” she expressed, recounting how her friend Elder Liz Settee and others filled her office to deliver the news.

Vedress, who recently celebrated her 20th anniversary as Minister at Calvary United, was completely taken by surprise. “I didn’t know what it was for. I had no idea,” she stated. Her nomination was supported by community leaders, including Bob Hayes, who played a crucial role in bringing her to the meeting.

The room was packed with supporters, including Prince Albert Police Chief Patrick Nogier, who also endorsed Vedress’ nomination. “I don’t think my office has ever been this full,” she remarked, highlighting the overwhelming community support she has received.

Throughout her two decades in Prince Albert, Vedress has made significant contributions to numerous local initiatives, from serving as emcee for the Plates of Hope event to co-chairing the Police Service Women’s Commission. “There’s so many people who would be way more deserving,” she humbly stated, reflecting on the collective effort behind her achievements.

Vedress emphasized the spirit of community as vital to her work. “It’s not just me. It’s always a whole group,” she noted, pointing out how community members rally together in times of need. Settee, who supported Vedress’ nomination, declared, “She’s my earth angel,” crediting her with inspiring countless individuals to follow her lead.

During her acceptance speech, Vedress shared her initial plan to stay in Prince Albert for only three years but expressed how the community has embraced her. “There’s a beauty to this community that I don’t know that people from outside of it see,” she reflected, noting that the city feels like a small town where everyone knows each other.

Plans are currently underway for a special Citizen of the Year Banquet to honor Vedress further. This event is expected to celebrate her unwavering commitment to community service and the profound impact she has made over the years.
