Nor’easter Set to Slam Maritimes with Snow, Rain, and Winds
URGENT UPDATE: A powerful nor’easter is poised to impact the Maritimes from February 6 through February 7, bringing a dangerous mix of high winds, heavy rain, and significant snowfall. Residents should prepare for potential power outages and travel disruptions, including ferry and bridge closures, as wind gusts are forecast to reach between 70 and 90 km/h.
The storm will begin affecting the region on Tuesday evening and is expected to peak overnight. Snowfall totals may vary widely, with some areas in Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and southern New Brunswick potentially seeing between 15 and 30 cm of heavy, wet snow, particularly in higher elevations and inland regions.
Weather officials emphasize that the heaviest impacts are likely for areas from the Annapolis Valley to Truro and eastern P.E.I.. A slight temperature fluctuation could dramatically change the snowfall forecast, creating pockets of heavier snow in locations like the Cobequid Pass and Mount Thom.
As conditions worsen, travel could become treacherous. On Tuesday afternoon, light snow will begin across the region, with coastal areas starting as rain. Commuters should expect slick roads during the evening drive, especially for those traveling home from work.
Once the storm intensifies on Tuesday night, snowfall rates will increase dramatically. Coastal regions will see a mix of rain and snow, while inland areas will be buried under accumulating snow. By Wednesday morning, many will face a messy and potentially hazardous commute as the storm continues to deliver snow and rain.
The storm’s winds will also present a critical risk. Gusts are expected to reach 70 to 80 km/h across Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and southeastern New Brunswick, with coastal gusts potentially hitting 90 km/h in areas like eastern P.E.I. and Cape Breton. Winds are anticipated to ease later on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials urge residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and to take precautions for power outages and difficult travel conditions. As the storm develops, those in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and monitor local advisories for the latest updates.
With severe winter weather looming, the urgency to prepare is crucial. Stay safe and informed as the Maritimes brace for this significant weather event.
