Northern Ont. Man Fined $1,800 for Lengthy Crown Land Camping
URGENT UPDATE: A northern Ontario man has been fined $1,800 for violating camping regulations on Crown land, confirming the strict enforcement of camping laws in the region. Michael Cox, a resident of Atikokan, pleaded guilty after leaving his camper trailer at Williamson Lake for over six weeks, far exceeding the 21-day limit allowed for camping.
Conservation officers first spotted Cox’s trailer on May 14, 2023, and reported it remained in the same location multiple times until its removal on June 25, 2023. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry emphasized the importance of adhering to these rules, stating, “Canadian residents can camp for free on Crown land for up to 21 days at one site in a calendar year, unless the site has been restricted for a specific reason.”
This case highlights the ongoing issues of camping regulation enforcement in Ontario, as well as the responsibility of campers to comply with local laws. Failure to follow these guidelines not only results in hefty fines but also disrupts natural resources and public access to popular camping spots.
Authorities indicate that after exceeding the 21-day limit, campers must move at least 100 meters to a new location. For international campers, obtaining a Crown land camping permit is mandatory, costing approximately $9.35 per person per day plus HST.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for all campers in Ontario to remain aware of the regulations governing Crown land usage, especially as the camping season approaches. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources continues to monitor compliance and enforce these rules to protect public lands.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and ensure you are informed on the regulations to avoid facing similar penalties.
