Nova Scotia Invests $3 Million in Urgent Affordable Housing
UPDATE: The Government of Nova Scotia has just announced a significant investment of $3 million in two urgent affordable housing projects located in Port Hawkesbury and Arichat. This funding will create 29 new affordable housing units on top of the 50 units already under construction.
“We said we would build more housing, faster, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” stated Kyle MacQuarrie, MLA for Inverness, on behalf of Growth and Development Minister Colton LeBlanc. The projects are expected to significantly enhance housing accessibility and affordability in the Strait region, while also stimulating local economies and fostering community development.
DC Developments Inc. is spearheading the construction of 40 new housing units at 100 Reeves St. in Port Hawkesbury, with 20 units designated as affordable. These units will consist of a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments, conveniently located near the Nova Scotia Community College Strait Area campus. The province’s contribution through the Affordable Housing Development Program totals over $2 million, with the overall project cost reaching $7.82 million.
“We’re excited to work with the province on an affordable housing project that will support the Strait area,” said Jeremey Carroll, director of DC Developments Inc. “Quality housing strengthens communities, and we are proud to play a role in that success for the Strait region.”
In a parallel initiative, Lennox Place Limited is transforming a commercial building at 818 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Arichat into residential housing. This project will feature 10 new units, with 9 of those being affordable. The province has allocated $990,000 for this project, contributing to a total cost of around $2.1 million.
“Lennox Place Limited is incredibly grateful for the support from the province, which has been essential in bringing this project to life,” remarked Rachelle Samson, owner of Lennox Place Limited. “This 10-unit apartment building will provide safe, affordable homes for local residents in Arichat, where housing options are limited.”
With a total investment of $3 million into these two developments, the province is making a decisive move to address the housing crisis in rural Nova Scotia. As these projects progress, they promise to create vital housing solutions that will enhance the quality of life for many residents in the region.
Stay tuned for more updates as these projects unfold and contribute to the urgent need for affordable housing in Nova Scotia. For the latest news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
