UPDATE: Nova Scotia has just announced emergency financial support for residents evacuated due to the rapidly escalating Lake George wildfire. Applications for this crucial assistance begin TODAY, offering immediate relief to those impacted in Kings County.

The wildfire, which ignited on September 28, is currently out of control, exacerbated by dry and windy conditions. As of Tuesday, the fire has consumed 288 hectares and forced the evacuation of 353 properties. Thankfully, officials confirmed that no structures have been lost to date.

The province stated, “Given current wildfire activity, it is not known when residents will be able to go home,” heightening the urgency for those displaced. Mayor Dave Corkum reported that 391 individuals from 205 households have registered with the Canadian Red Cross at a shelter in New Minas, Nova Scotia. However, only three individuals are currently utilizing this facility, as most evacuees are staying with family or in motels.

The newly announced financial support program is specifically designed for residents displaced from their primary residences. Those who were forced to leave secondary homes, such as cottages, are not eligible. Evacuees displaced for four to seven days will receive $500 per adult aged 18 and over, and $200 per minor. For those evacuated for eight to 14 days, an additional $500 per adult and $200 per minor will be provided. Adults displaced for 15 days or more will receive an additional $250 per week, while minors will receive an extra $200 weekly. The total assistance is capped at $3,000 per adult and $1,750 per minor.

Funding for this support will be available until the evacuation order is lifted or until the end of the wildfire season on October 31—whichever comes first.

As firefighting efforts continue, a total of 62 Department of Natural Resources firefighters, 23 local firefighters, and 39 personnel from British Columbia are actively battling the blaze. Resources also include aircraft from Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories, alongside five helicopters and 30 pieces of heavy equipment.

Residents and local officials are anxiously awaiting further updates as the situation develops. This urgent financial aid is a critical lifeline for many families facing uncertainty. Stay tuned for more information on this evolving story as it unfolds.
