Nova Scotia’s Long Lake Wildfire Continues to Rage, 8,234 Hectares Affected

URGENT UPDATE: The Long Lake wildfire in Nova Scotia remains out of control as of Thursday morning, affecting an estimated 8,234 hectares. The fire, which ignited on August 13, continues to pose a significant threat to nearby communities.
As of 11:30 a.m., crews are battling the blaze with a robust response that includes 11 helicopters and 6 planes. Ground forces consist of 12 firefighters from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), along with 89 Ontario firefighters and 70 local firefighters. The situation is dire, with the fire having jumped dozer guards over the weekend, resulting in confirmed damage to several homes.
In a recent social media update, Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources reported, “Crews had a very productive day yesterday working on flanks, aiming to limit growth and spread toward communities as drier conditions return.” Despite these efforts, the risk remains high due to changing weather patterns.
An air quality warning is currently in effect for Annapolis County, where smoke from the wildfire is severely impacting air quality. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed and limit outdoor activities as conditions may vary with shifting winds and fire behavior.
Deputy Warden and Councillor for Annapolis County District 3, Dustin Enslow, expressed the challenges faced by firefighting crews. “I know one of the reports I got just on the structure protection, it was about seven million gallons of water used to save structures,” he stated during an interview on CTV Morning Live. “But now, over the past two days, we’re starting to see that morale boost back up, and the community is extremely supportive of the firefighters.”
The Red Cross is actively providing assistance, and residents in need of information or evacuation support can call 1-833-806-1515 for help. As this situation continues to develop, officials urge the public to stay informed and vigilant.
Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story as firefighting efforts continue and the community rallies to support those affected by the Long Lake wildfire.
