URGENT UPDATE: Oak Bay police have seized a rifle from a man found sleeping in his vehicle at Cattle Point on August 31. The incident unfolded when an officer noticed a vehicle parked without a front licence plate in a stall designated for boat trailers.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered the male driver asleep in the front seat, unable to provide a driver’s licence or vehicle registration. The situation escalated when the driver disclosed that a firearm was present in the vehicle. Officers quickly observed the buttstock of a rifle within the driver’s reach.
The weapon, identified as an unloaded lever-action rifle, was not secured with a trigger lock, raising serious safety concerns. Additionally, nine rounds of ammunition were found stored in a sleeve attached to the rifle’s buttstock.
Police arrested the individual for unsafe storage of a firearm and issued a violation ticket for the missing front plate. After processing, he was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
The Oak Bay Police Department confirmed that their investigation is ongoing, emphasizing the importance of firearm safety in the community. This incident raises alarms about the potential dangers posed by unsecured weapons, especially in public areas.
Authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activity immediately. The community is reminded of the critical importance of responsible firearm ownership and the legal requirements surrounding it.
