Orléans Hockey Team Delivers 100 Care Packages to Ottawa’s Vulnerable
On March 16, 2024, the Orléans Eastend Storm hockey team actively supported Ottawa’s vulnerable community by delivering 100 care packages. In collaboration with the SOS Street Outreach Society, players and coaches walked through the Lower Town area, distributing essential items to those in need.
The care packages contained a variety of goods, including food, personal hygiene products, and reusable water bottles. Guillaume Tremblay, the coach of the Orléans Eastend Storm, emphasized the significance of this experience for the young athletes. He noted that volunteering provided a valuable perspective on the challenges faced by marginalized members of society. “It’s really something special,” Tremblay remarked, expressing the importance of teaching youth to be generous and engaged in their communities.
Many of the items included in the packages were sourced through generous donations from local businesses and residents of Orléans. Tremblay highlighted, “A lot of things we were able to gather up due to some generous businesses and donators in Orléans.” This community support was instrumental in making the initiative a success.
The collaboration began during one of SOS Street Outreach Society’s regular walks. Bruce McConville, the organization’s coordinator, described the partnership as a “great initiative.” He expressed pride in the hockey team’s involvement, stating, “We’re very proud and honoured that they have joined forces and volunteered along with us.”
Founded three years ago, the SOS Street Outreach Society aims to combat street homelessness in Ottawa and across Canada. McConville explained their mission, saying, “We’re an active group of volunteers that are intent on helping our homeless brothers and sisters.” He referred to Ottawa’s most vulnerable individuals as MVPs, emphasizing their importance in the community and the need for broader public engagement in addressing chronic homelessness.
The initiative allowed the Orléans Eastend Storm to extend their outreach beyond the hockey rink. Tremblay remarked on the emotional impact of the experience, stating, “You open up your heart to others, you distribute the love to others, and you get a lot of love back at the same time.”
Through this outreach, the hockey team not only provided necessary supplies but also fostered a deeper connection within the community. Their efforts highlighted the potential for sports teams to play a significant role in local social causes, encouraging a spirit of generosity and support among young athletes.
