UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill, Oswego Co-Op sophomore Alli Wiertel has won the IHSA Class 2A state championship, breaking multiple records during the event held at Hickory Point in Forsyth on Saturday. Wiertel’s remarkable performance included a record-setting 7-under par 65 in the final round, finishing the tournament at 8-under par, a full five strokes ahead of runner-up Martha Kuwahara from Glenbrook North.

This achievement not only highlights Wiertel’s talent but also marks a significant moment in high school golf, as she shattered the previous two-day record of 6-under set by Nicole Johnson of Edwardsville in 2022. Additionally, she eclipsed the previous single-round record of 5-under held by Lauren Beaudreau from Benet, established in 2018.

Wiertel, who finished fourth in the state last year, entered Saturday’s final round in third place at 1-under par, trailing New Trier’s Grace Leber by two shots. After a bogey on the first hole, she rebounded spectacularly, scoring birdies on five of the next eight holes, including three consecutive birdies from holes five to seven. Her momentum continued on the back nine, where she secured birdies on three of her first six holes, finishing strong with three pars.

This victory caps off a sensational season for Wiertel, who previously shot a course record 59 at Whitetail Ridge in September. Her accolades this season include being named the Southwest Prairie Conference MVP, earning medalist honors at both the conference and regional meets, and placing second at the sectional competition.

In related news, Oswego East senior Zach Johnson secured a 10th place finish at the Class 3A state meet held at The Den at Fox Creek. Johnson, who started the final round in 14th place, climbed to 10th after shooting even-par on Saturday, achieving a score of 2-over par for the tournament.

As the season concludes, all eyes will be on Wiertel as she prepares for the next challenges ahead, aiming to build on her impressive achievements and continue her ascent in high school golf.
