URGENT UPDATE: Ottawa first responders have successfully rescued a construction worker trapped in a utility tunnel after a fall of approximately three metres in the city’s south end. The incident occurred shortly before noon on Friday, October 20, 2023, in the 700 block of Heron Road.

Authorities report that the worker was engaged in removing temporary wooden barriers when he fell through an uncovered trench cut into the tunnel’s ceiling, landing on his back. Ottawa Fire Services received the call from Ottawa police and promptly dispatched specialized rope rescue teams to the scene.

Upon arrival, the teams assessed the situation and determined that the safest method for extrication was to lift the worker back through the opening. Crews set up a twin-tension rope system, deploying a litter to the trapped worker. With the assistance of Ottawa Paramedic Service members, the worker was carefully “packaged” for the lift.

The rescue operation was executed quickly and efficiently, with the worker being safely lifted from the trench. He was then transferred into the care of Ottawa Paramedics for medical assessment. As of now, there are no updates on the worker’s medical condition.

This incident highlights the risks faced by construction workers and the crucial role of first responders in ensuring their safety. As details emerge, the community remains on alert for any further updates regarding the worker’s health.
