Ottawa Senators Celebrate 35 Years of NHL Hockey This Saturday
URGENT UPDATE: The Ottawa Senators are set to celebrate a monumental milestone this Saturday, marking 35 years since their return to the NHL. Fans can join the festivities as the Senators take on the St. Louis Blues at 7 p.m. EDT, a game that promises to be filled with nostalgia and excitement.
The Senators, alongside the Tampa Bay Lightning, were awarded franchises during the NHL’s 1990 expansion, paving the way for professional hockey’s return to Ottawa in 1992 after nearly six decades. This historic moment will be honored by key figures from the Senators’ initial bid, including former owner Bruce Firestone, who described the day as “the most important day of my life.”
“Today the board of governors awarded [a new franchise] to the city of Ottawa,” said current president Cyril Leeder, who vividly recalls the cheers that followed the announcement.
Reflecting on the challenges faced during the expansion bid, Firestone revealed that doubts nearly derailed their efforts. “A member of the board of governors approached me to say we would ‘never, ever, ever get a franchise in Ottawa,’” he recounted. “It was a character test.” Despite moments of uncertainty, the group persevered, and when their bid was ultimately successful, Firestone’s reaction was pure joy: “Oh, my God, we just won this thing!”
Fast forward to today, and the Senators have not only returned but have exceeded expectations. Leeder noted, “Whatever we thought it was gonna be, it’s been that multiple times over,” highlighting the team’s significant impact on the city. Former mayor Jim Durrell once called the franchise’s arrival “the biggest thing to ever happen to the city of Ottawa,” a sentiment echoed by many.
Looking ahead, current team owner Michael Andlauer is optimistic about the future, stating, “I think we’re making good progression on the ice.” Currently, the Senators stand third in the Atlantic Division. Off the ice, plans for a new arena at LeBreton Flats are underway, with Andlauer expressing enthusiasm over its prime location near downtown Ottawa.
“What an amazing location for people in that region to be entertained,” Andlauer remarked, as discussions continue with the National Capital Commission regarding the new venue.
The Senators’ journey over the past 35 years showcases resilience, passion, and community spirit. As they prepare for Saturday’s celebration, fans are reminded of the profound impact the team has had on Ottawa’s identity and its place in the NHL.
Join the Ottawa Senators as they honor their rich history and look forward to an exciting future this Saturday at 7 p.m. Don’t miss out on this special occasion!
