URGENT UPDATE: Over 1,200 students from Renfrew County are currently exploring diverse career paths in skilled trades at the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus through Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) groundbreaking Trades Promoting Trades initiative. This multi-day event, marking its debut in the Ottawa Valley, connects students in Grades 7 to 12 with industry professionals, offering hands-on experiences and insights into the energy sector.

“This initiative, started by OPG employees, aims to inspire youth to explore various trades,” said Jennifer Gardiner, stakeholder relations representative at OPG. “We are thrilled to host it here for the first time.”

The event features interactive demonstrations, including welding simulators, rope and diving showcases, and chemical reaction displays, allowing students to engage directly with skilled trades. Many attendees have already donned personal protective equipment and handled industry tools under expert supervision.

Jodi Bucholtz, manager of community and student affairs at the Pembroke campus, highlighted the strong partnerships that made this event possible. “We are honored to host this pivotal event in the Ottawa Valley,” she stated. “Experiential learning is vital, and this collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission.”

Organizers expect around 1,500 participants over the next three days, drawing not just students but also college learners and community members. Importantly, this initiative is not a recruitment drive for Algonquin College; instead, it aims to showcase the educational role colleges play in skilled trades.

“Students interested in trades should connect with their guidance counselors to explore available programs,” Bucholtz advised. “There are various pathways, including college certifications, university programs, or apprenticeships.”

OPG representatives are emphasizing the wide array of career opportunities within the company, from millwrights and electricians to welders and environmental technicians. This program builds on a successful initiative launched years ago at OPG’s Lennox Generating Station, where local students were first invited to experience the trades.

Education leaders, including Kristen Niemi, director of education with the Renfrew County District School Board, stress the importance of introducing skilled trades to younger students. “This event is crucial; it helps build excitement and awareness about trades before students select high school courses,” Niemi explained.

Feedback from families has shown a strong interest in early exposure to trade opportunities, which is integral for informed decision-making as students progress through their education.

“This collaborative effort truly reflects a community vision for creating opportunities for youth in Renfrew County,” Niemi added, emphasizing the role of local school boards and partnerships in making this event a reality.

As the event continues today, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and insights, fostering a broader conversation about the vital role of skilled trades in the future workforce. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring initiative!
