Owen Sound Attack Stuns London Knights 3-2 in Overtime Thriller

UPDATE: In a dramatic opening to the 2025-26 Ontario Hockey League season, the Owen Sound Attack pulled off a stunning 3-2 overtime victory against the London Knights at Canada Life Place on Friday night. Jacob Therrien scored the game-winner with just 27.7 seconds left in overtime, completing a remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
The Knights, who dominated early, showcased their defensive strength by killing off an impressive 11 straight minutes of Owen Sound power-play time in the first period. Despite the pressure, the teams entered the first intermission scoreless, thanks to stellar goaltending from Seb Gatto of London and Trenton Bennett of Owen Sound.
The Knights struck first in the second period. At 5:36, Cohen Bidgood raced down the ice and netted a low shot to put London ahead 1-0. Jaxon Cover followed up with a highlight-reel goal at 12:57, extending the Knights’ lead to 2-0. London’s defense held strong, limiting the Attack to just 16 shots through two periods.
However, the Attack ignited a fierce comeback in the third. Cole Zurawski scored at 3:18, capitalizing on a pass from Londoner Noah Nelson to make it 2-1. Just past the halfway mark, Nicholas Sykora blasted a one-timer on a power play at 14:14, tying the game at 2-2.
As the overtime period unfolded, the Knights seemed poised for a shootout when, with under 30 seconds remaining, Zurawski set up Therrien for a quick shot that sealed the victory for Owen Sound.
The Knights outshot the Attack 47-28 but struggled on special teams, finishing 0-for-4 on the power play. Owen Sound capitalized effectively, going 2-for-8 with the man advantage.
Before the game, the Knights celebrated their recent achievements by raising five new championship banners, including their title as Memorial Cup Champions in 2025.
Looking ahead, the London Knights will visit the Windsor Spitfires on Saturday, September 20, at 7:00 PM, following Windsor’s impressive 8-1 victory over the Sarnia Sting. Fans can catch the action live starting at 6:30 PM on 980 CFPL, as well as via iHeart Radio and Radioplayer Canada apps.
This thrilling opener sets a high bar for the rest of the season as both teams look to build momentum. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
