UPDATE: The iconic P.E.I. Christmas House in Charlottetown is lighting up the night and raising critical funds for cancer research, with over $21,000 collected since its inception in 2019. As of December 2023, visitors are flocking to the cul-de-sac to marvel at the dazzling displays while contributing to a cause that impacts many families.

The festive spectacle features a staggering 38,000 lights and more than two dozen towering inflatables, attracting crowds eager to experience the holiday magic. Many attendees, like Jan Rooth, who has undergone cancer treatment locally, express deep gratitude for the fundraising efforts. “After having treatment here on the Island, I know what it takes,” Rooth shared. “It does take money to do that.”

Visitors are encouraged to drop donations in a collection box at the house, with each contribution helping to support vital services provided by the Canadian Cancer Society. “It’s pretty cool, there’s a lot of work that went into this thing,” said visitor Mike Gilbert, highlighting the community spirit surrounding this initiative.

The mastermind behind the P.E.I. Christmas House, Liam Kearney, dedicates countless hours to creating this winter wonderland. He meticulously sets up the lights and decorations each year, often repairing any damage caused by inclement weather. “Having young children myself, it’s nice to be able to see the Christmas lights and get in the Christmas spirit,” Kearney stated. “But there’s also a lot of people here on P.E.I. that have been affected by cancer and want to contribute to this.”

With estimates from the Canadian Cancer Society projecting 254,800 new cancer cases and 87,400 cancer deaths in Canada by 2025, the need for funding has never been more urgent. Kearney aims to raise an additional $5,000 this year to support patients through services like travel accommodations for treatment and providing necessities such as wigs for those undergoing chemotherapy.

Online donations can be made through the Canadian Cancer Society’s P.E.I. Christmas House fundraiser page, ensuring tax receipts are issued for eligible contributions. “Every moment is a gift, especially at Christmas time, and especially for people living with cancer,” Kearney emphasized, reflecting the heartfelt mission behind the dazzling display.

As the holiday season unfolds, the P.E.I. Christmas House stands as a beacon of hope and community support. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to come, witness the enchantment, and contribute to a cause that affects so many.
