P.E.I. Expands RSV Treatment for Infants, Seniors Starting October
BREAKING: Prince Edward Island is expanding its critical RSV prevention programs, effective October 2023, to protect vulnerable infants and seniors from severe illness. All infants will now qualify for the monoclonal antibody treatment Beyfortus (nirsevimab), marking a significant step in safeguarding young children as RSV season approaches.
The typical RSV season runs from November to April, and this long-acting treatment promises season-long protection for infants, who are at heightened risk of serious complications from the virus. Additionally, starting in September 2023, seniors aged 75 and older will also gain access to the RSV vaccine ABRYSVO, enhancing protection for the elderly population.
Minister of Health and Wellness Mark McLane emphasized the importance of these programs, stating, “RSV can have serious consequences for the most vulnerable in our population – young infants and older adults.” He highlighted that expanding protections for both demographics aims to reduce preventable hospitalizations and support a healthier community.
The demand for such measures comes in response to a concerning rise in RSV-related hospitalizations. Over the past two years, P.E.I. has recorded more than 150 hospitalizations linked to RSV. Dr. Heather Morrison, the chief public health officer, confirmed that protecting infants and older adults is crucial to lessening hospital admissions and improving health outcomes.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a widespread respiratory virus that can lead to serious conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Symptoms typically include a runny nose, cough, sneezing, wheezing, and fever. For infants, the impact can be even more severe, causing irritability, difficulty breathing, and reduced appetite.
These expanded programs align with national recommendations and evidence around RSV prevention, marking a pivotal moment for public health in Prince Edward Island. The measures not only aim to protect the most vulnerable but also serve to ease pressures on the healthcare system during the RSV season.
Residents of P.E.I. are urged to take advantage of these new offerings. The provincial government is making a significant investment in the health of Islanders, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and preventive care.
