UPDATE: In a heart-wrenching call for change, a couple from Pierrefonds–Roxboro is pushing for tougher drunk driving laws after their daughter, Jessica Bittar, was tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2017. At a recent police roadblock, Antoine Bittar and Elizabeth Rivera raised awareness, hoping to prevent similar tragedies during the holiday season.

The Bittar family’s pain is palpable. “Like a big chunk of your life disappears,” Antoine shared about the devastating moment police arrived at their home to deliver the news of Jessica’s death. “We weren’t even talking to each other. We’re like, what’s happening? It’s not true,” added Elizabeth, reflecting on that fateful night when their lives changed forever.

Now, they are channeling their grief into advocacy, fighting for stricter penalties for impaired drivers. Currently, Quebec’s blood-alcohol limit stands at 0.08, but the couple is calling for a reduction to 0.05. “This change could save more than 50% of lives on the road,” Bittar stated, highlighting that over 60% of Quebecers support this measure.

The couple’s plea comes as they express frustration with the Coalition Avenir Québec government, which has resisted implementing these necessary changes. “We’re mad about the government who cannot take a responsible decision,” Bittar emphasized, urging officials to act with urgency.

In a powerful outreach effort, Antoine speaks directly to individuals with impaired driving convictions. “What would you say if you were the person who killed my daughter?” he asks, provoking critical reflection on the consequences of their actions. His advocacy work has gained recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), with President Theresa-Anne Kramer commending the couple’s efforts to ensure Jessica’s story resonates with others.

As the holiday season approaches, Antoine and Elizabeth hope their story will deter others from driving under the influence. “A fatal collision takes just one minute to change lives forever,” Rivera warned, underscoring the lasting impact of such tragedies.

The Bittar family’s journey illustrates the profound human cost of impaired driving, igniting a call to action that resonates with all families. They implore the community to consider the stakes and make responsible choices this holiday season.
