Peotone Volleyball Surges Past Streator in Thrilling 2-0 Win

UPDATE: The Peotone volleyball team delivered an impressive performance, defeating Streator in a nail-biting Illinois Central Eight Conference match on October 3, 2023, at Pops Dale Gymnasium. The Blue Devils clinched the match with scores of 25-22 and 26-24, showcasing their resilience and teamwork.
Peotone showcased remarkable energy throughout the match, particularly in the critical moments. “The girls had a ton of energy tonight and played relaxed,” said Peotone coach Kathy Barger. “It seemed like whenever we were in a pressure situation or needed a key point, they found ways to get it.”
The first set was a roller coaster, featuring 11 ties and neither team able to pull ahead by more than three points. However, trailing 21-20, Peotone rallied to score five of the final six points, with a pivotal kill from Cora Pagliarulo sealing the deal.
Senior standout Mia Connolley led Peotone with eight kills, a block, and four service points, illustrating her crucial role in the victory. “It’s something we need to be more consistent in, but tonight we had the energy and kept it up all the way to the end,” Connolley remarked.
In the second set, Peotone initially surged ahead with leads of 13-8, 17-10, and 19-11. However, Streator battled back, with a four-point service run from Avery Gribbin to narrow the gap. Tragically, momentum shifted when Streator’s Aubrey Jacobs, who had contributed significantly, suffered an injury and had to exit the match.
As the set intensified, Streator managed to tie the score at 22-all following back-to-back aces by Ashlee Taylor. Yet, Peotone remained unfazed, utilizing swings from Connolley and Alexa Matichak, along with crucial errors from the Bulldogs, to close out the match.
“I thought we did a great job with our serve-receive, served aggressively, and were solid at the net with our blocking,” Connolley added, praising her team’s all-around effort.
With this victory, Peotone improves to 16-8 overall and 5-5 in league play, while Streator falls to 15-9-1 and 5-5. Both teams are set to return to action on October 5, 2023, with Streator facing Herscher and Peotone hosting Reed-Custer.
As the season progresses, Peotone’s coach Barger expressed pride in her team’s defensive capabilities, emphasizing their collective strength. “The girls did a great job of keeping plays alive, and we did a solid job at the net with our blocking, which was a key as well,” she noted.
This thrilling match not only highlights the competitive spirit within the Illinois Central Eight Conference but also sets the stage for more exciting encounters ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on these teams as they continue their season.
