UPDATE: In a thrilling race at Woodbine Racetrack, 20-year-old apprentice jockey Pietro Moran clinched victory aboard Mansetti, winning the prestigious $1 million King’s Plate on August 16, 2025. This remarkable triumph marks Moran’s second appearance in the Plate, following a fourth-place finish last year.

Moran, who is currently Woodbine’s leading jockey with 65 wins this season, guided Mansetti—an 18-1 pick—to a near wire-to-wire finish in a time of 2:03.68. This race was particularly special as it made history, featuring both Moran and his father, David Moran, who finished eighth aboard William T. This is the first time in Plate history that a father and son have competed in this iconic event.

“It’s just special,” exclaimed a jubilant Pietro Moran. “I got to beat my dad in the biggest race of the year.”

This victory also earned Kevin Attard, Canada’s champion trainer, his third King’s Plate win and second consecutive title. Mansetti finished ahead of Tom’s Magic by 2 1/2 lengths, with Notorious Gangster taking third place.

Attard praised Moran’s talent, stating, “To accomplish this feat at such a young age is a testament to what the future holds for him.” He added, “Winning the Plate with Pietro makes it that much more special.”

The race began with Scorching taking the early lead, but Moran quickly surged ahead with Mansetti, maintaining control throughout. “He relaxed so good, and I just talked to him the whole way,” Moran shared. “When I chirped at him around the turn, he gave it to me. I couldn’t stop screaming to the wire.”

Mansetti’s victory marks his third win in five starts this year, bringing his career earnings to over $855,000. Looking ahead, Attard is considering racing Mansetti in the upcoming $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on September 9 at Fort Erie Racetrack.

In related news, the $750,000 E.P. Taylor turf event saw She Feels Pretty take the lead on the final turn, narrowly defeating Diamond Rain by a head. This victory secured She Feels Pretty an automatic spot in the US$2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on November 1 at Del Mar.

This remarkable day at the Woodbine Racetrack not only highlighted the thrill of horse racing but also showcased the emotional stakes for both jockeys and their families. As excitement builds for the next phase of the Canadian Triple Crown, fans are eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for these talented competitors.

Stay tuned as developments unfold in the world of horse racing, and keep an eye on Pietro Moran and Mansetti as they aim for further glory.
