UPDATE: A man has been charged following a tense incident involving a weapon in Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities confirm that around 3:15 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting a person with a gun in a parking lot between Gore and Blucher streets.

Police quickly responded, but the suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived. An investigation revealed that the accused, identified as Kristiani Mattila, 35, engaged in a verbal altercation with multiple victims. During this confrontation, Mattila allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the victims while making threatening statements.

The victims did not know Mattila, raising the stakes of the situation. Officers located and apprehended Mattila nearby, discovering a bag linked to him. Inside, they found an airsoft pistol that closely resembled a real firearm, indicating the potential for serious misunderstanding.

Mattila is currently facing charges and was held in custody pending a bail hearing. Authorities stress that none of the allegations have been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and the alarming frequency of such threats. As the investigation continues, community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
