Power Restored to Thousands in Atlantic Region After Weekend Storm
UPDATE: Power is being rapidly restored to thousands of homes and businesses across the Atlantic region following a severe windstorm that struck over the weekend. As of Sunday, October 15, 2023, utility companies are working diligently to restore electricity to the final affected customers after winds reached dangerous speeds.
Emergency services report that high winds caused widespread outages, leaving approximately 3,500 customers without power as of early Sunday morning. The storm, characterized by gusts exceeding 100 km/h, wreaked havoc on infrastructure, leading to downed power lines and fallen trees across Halifax and surrounding areas.
Utility companies have mobilized crews to assess and repair the damage. “We understand how critical it is for our customers to have their power back as soon as possible,” stated a spokesperson from Nova Scotia Power. “Our teams are working around the clock to ensure safety and restore services.”
Residents are urged to remain cautious as crews continue their work. Many roads remain blocked by debris, and officials are advising against unnecessary travel. The Halifax Regional Municipality has also deployed additional personnel to assist with emergency response efforts.
This restoration effort comes as the region braces for potentially more severe weather conditions later this week. Meteorologists warn that another system could bring additional rain and winds, complicating restoration and cleanup efforts.
Local businesses are feeling the impact, with many forced to close temporarily due to the outages. “It’s been tough. We rely on power for everything,” said a local shop owner. “We just hope things get back to normal soon.”
WHAT’S NEXT: Residents are advised to stay tuned for updates from local authorities regarding power restoration timelines and weather forecasts. As utility companies continue to assess the damage, customers can report outages through their respective service providers’ websites.
