Priceless Heirloom Stolen from Nanaimo Seniors in Shocking Theft
URGENT UPDATE: A treasured family heirloom has been stolen from a Nanaimo couple, causing emotional turmoil as they seek its return. Ken and Lori Bennett, well-known in their community, reported the theft of a priceless wooden cane on September 25, 2025, at approximately 2 p.m. from the Blenz Coffee Shop in Woodgrove Centre.
The cane, a special gift from Ken’s late mother, Barbara Bennett, symbolizes cherished family memories. “It meant a lot,” Ken Bennett stated, visibly shaken. “It was something that my mom gave to Lori.” The cane has become a significant part of Lori’s daily walks, making the loss even more profound.
The couple was heartbroken after discovering the cane missing from their shopping cart, located just two meters from their table. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a woman, described as wearing a red puffy vest, taking the cane without hesitation. “It made me feel rotten,” Ken lamented. “You don’t think someone’s going to jack your cane.”
Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien confirmed the theft, stating, “We’re working to identify the individual.” The couple hopes the community can help recover the heirloom that holds immense sentimental value. “It really means a lot to me to get that back,” said Lori, her voice filled with emotion.
The theft has drawn attention locally, with many residents expressing outrage over the act. Ken and Lori’s story has resonated with others, highlighting the violation of trust in a community space. “A lot of people who passed by would comment on the cane and its story,” Ken added.
As the investigation continues, locals are urged to keep an eye out for the stolen cane and report any sightings to the authorities. This incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of cherished items and the impact of theft on individuals and families.
Residents and community members are encouraged to share this story widely, as the Bennetts hope for a swift resolution. The emotional toll of losing such a significant heirloom is immeasurable, and every lead could help reunite the couple with their beloved cane.
