URGENT UPDATE: The annual Two Miles for Mary radiothon kicks off on September 26, 2024, with a goal to raise $45,000 to support senior transportation in Prince Albert. This year marks the 38th edition of the beloved event, combining a live radiothon with a community pancake breakfast at the Prince Albert Heritage Centre.

The Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre is rallying support for local seniors who depend on affordable and reliable transportation. Fundraising coordinator Kayla Pollock emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “It makes a huge difference for their independence and their quality of life.” Last year, the event raised approximately $30,000, and organizers are determined to exceed that total this time.

The fundraiser supports a transportation program that completed over 6,000 trips in 2024, reflecting a 5% increase from the previous year. Many seniors rely on this service to attend essential appointments and maintain social connections within the community. Pollock noted, “Some people don’t know what they would do without this service as far as getting to doctor’s appointments and meeting friends for coffee.”

This year’s pancake breakfast, sponsored by Co-op, is open to the public and encourages guests to bring donations or challenge local businesses to match contributions. The radiothon will air live on 900 CKBI and Power 99 FM, offering a platform for community members to engage and contribute.

For those unable to attend in person, donations can be made via the Community Service Centre’s website, by cheque, or through e-transfer. Donations can also be made by calling 306-763-MARY (6279) during the radiothon. Pollock is enhancing outreach this year with increased advertising, digital promotions, and direct appeals to local businesses.

Pollock stated, “The seniors are a big part of this community. If we all step in together, we can keep the service going and keep it strong for Prince Albert.” As the event approaches, the urgency to support local seniors has never been clearer.

Join the effort to help keep Prince Albert’s seniors moving—every little donation counts!
