Prince George Aquatic Centre Gears Up for Provincial Championships
URGENT UPDATE: The 67th annual provincial swimming championships are set to take place at the Prince George Aquatic Centre from August 11 to 17, 2023, drawing an estimated 6,000 attendees, including athletes and their families. As the event approaches, staff are working tirelessly to prepare for this high-stakes competition hosted by the BC Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA).
The championships will showcase a range of aquatic sports, including diving, artistic swimming, water polo, and speed swimming. “This is an exciting time for the aquatics team at the City of Prince George,” stated Jim Worthington, Aquatics Division Manager. “We are thrilled to be hosting provincials at the Aquatic Centre for the second time since 2007. We wish our local clubs the best of luck and look forward to welcoming the rest of the province to Prince George this month!”
In preparation for the championships, the Aquatic Centre will implement a series of closures to facilitate the event. Key dates include:
– The fitness centre will be closed from August 8 to 18 (remaining facilities will stay open).
– The wave pool will be closed from August 9 to 22 (remaining facilities will stay open).
– There will be a full closure of the Aquatic Centre from August 11 to 17 for the championships, with access limited to registered participants.
However, the Canfor Leisure Pool will remain open during regular hours throughout this period.
This championship marks a significant gathering for swimmers across the province, and with such large numbers expected, the impact on the local community is profound. Residents and businesses are gearing up for increased traffic and activity, making this a pivotal moment for the City of Prince George.
For those interested in pool hours and rates during this period, more information can be found on the City of Prince George’s official website. Additionally, details regarding the swimming championships can be accessed through the BCSSA’s website.
