URGENT UPDATE: Providence High School’s football team has triumphed over Kankakee in a nail-biting finish, securing a 35-25 victory in the Class 5A second-round playoff game held on October 28, 2023. This win marks the Celtics’ advancement to the quarterfinals for the 24th time in program history.

The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, especially for Kankakee, where quarterback Cedric Terrell III led a valiant comeback from an early 21-3 deficit. Terrell III showcased his versatility, making significant contributions on offense, defense, and special teams, bringing the Kays within striking distance by halftime. “That kid, man,” Kays coach Ed Hazelett praised. “He put this team on his back all year.”

The Kays initially struck first with a 32-yard field goal from Elijah Cunningham. However, Providence quickly took control, with running back Broden Mackert scoring three touchdowns in the first half, including a pivotal 59-yard run that pushed the Celtics ahead. Kankakee responded fiercely, with Terrell III connecting on a 32-yard touchdown pass to Ezekiel Sherrod, narrowing the gap to 21-10.

In a stunning turn, the Kays capitalized on a series of mistakes by the Celtics, including an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Terrell III and a 52-yard interception return for another touchdown, closing the score to 28-25 by halftime.

After the break, Kankakee’s momentum faltered. Despite excellent field position from a forced fumble, the Kays were unable to capitalize, thanks to a resilient Providence defense that blocked a field goal and forced multiple turnovers. “The defensive line was just outstanding,” said Providence coach Tyler Plantz.

Sophomore running back Brayden McKay sealed the victory with a crucial 12-yard touchdown with just over four minutes remaining in the game, finishing with a game-high 118 rushing yards, largely accumulated in the second half.

With this victory, Providence (8-3) now turns its focus to hosting Washington next weekend in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Kankakee (7-4) completed its season with a commendable performance, marking a school record of six consecutive playoff appearances under Hazelett’s leadership.

As excitement builds for the next round, both teams demonstrated resilience and determination, making this playoff clash one to remember. Fans and players alike will be eagerly anticipating the upcoming matchups as the playoff season intensifies.
