Providence Stuns Loyola 21-20 for First Win Since 2009

BREAKING: Providence High School achieved a thrilling 21-20 victory over Loyola on October 13, 2023, marking their first win against the Ramblers since 2009. This remarkable comeback, fueled by grit and determination, positions the Celtics as serious contenders in the upcoming playoff season.
Providence’s victory is not just a win; it’s a historic moment for the program. Trailing by 14-0 at halftime, the Celtics rallied in the second half, showcasing their resilience and teamwork. With this victory, Providence (5-2) has significantly boosted their chances as they prepare for the playoffs.
Junior running back Broden Mackert was a standout player, rushing for 142 yards and scoring two touchdowns. His final score, a decisive 3-yard run with just over a minute remaining, sealed the game for Providence. Mackert expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We came in knowing we were going to run the rock. No matter the rank of the opponent, we’ve got to fight.”
The victory celebration echoed through the stands, highlighted by a powerful Hail Mary cheer from fans. Junior linebacker Collin Shedwill played a pivotal role in the win, making a crucial sack during Loyola’s two-point conversion attempt with just 20.3 seconds left on the clock. “I needed to make a play for my team, and that’s what I did,” Shedwill said, emphasizing the significance of the game. “They predicted we had a 13% chance of winning. We came out here and proved them wrong.”
Head coach Tyler Plantz, who was part of the last Providence team to defeat Loyola, praised his players for their hard work and trust in one another. “It’s a testament to a lot of hard work,” Plantz noted. “The way they worked and believed in each other is awesome.”
In the first half, Loyola took an early lead with touchdowns from sophomore Jordan McKinley and Melo Maldonado, establishing a 14-0 advantage. However, Providence’s defense tightened, and following a botched punt by Loyola, the Celtics capitalized on the opportunity with a quick touchdown drive, narrowing the gap to 14-7 by halftime.
The second half was dominated by Providence, who executed 44 plays compared to Loyola’s 18. Their strategic adjustments at halftime proved effective, leading to a series of successful drives that ultimately turned the game around. “Loyola did a great job in the first half scheming up our defense,” Plantz said. “We made a quick adjustment and the kids executed it perfectly.”
As the game ended, the emotions were palpable. Players and fans celebrated the end of a long-awaited victory, one that not only boosts their season but also reignites the spirit of the Providence community. Loyola, now at 4-2, will look to regroup after this tough loss, having previously fallen to Brother Rice in their other defeat this season.
This stunning victory will be remembered as one of Providence’s defining moments, setting the stage for an exciting playoff journey ahead. Fans and players alike are buzzing with anticipation for what’s next as the Celtics prepare to prove themselves further on the field.
