Hundreds of attendees gathered at Lakeside Park in Nelson on Saturday night, despite inclement weather, for the annual Polka Dot Lantern Festival. This year’s event, themed “Swamp Refuge,” showcased giant glowing insects, birds, animals, and flowers, engaging visitors in a vibrant outdoor experience.

The festival emphasized a unique atmosphere, as noted by Myra Rasmussen, executive director of the Polka Dot Dragon Art Society. She stated that this edition featured more roving performers than stationary installations, enhancing the festival’s interactive quality. “There are a lot of wonderful puppets and costumes wandering around. There are at least two moose,” she said, highlighting the playful additions to the event.

Among the various attractions were geese, ducks, a giant stork-like bird, moths, and a dragon, all mingling with the festival-goers. The Rotary shelter was artfully transformed into a swamp environment, complete with fog machines to create an immersive experience. The festival also included live performances at a parade on Baker Street the previous night, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

For the first time, a matinee performance took place on Saturday afternoon, preceding the main after-dark festivities. “I’m not such a winter person, and it really drives my passion and creativity through the winter to be creating something like this,” Rasmussen explained. The event provided a platform for puppet makers to collaborate and showcase their creativity, while the public enjoyed a winter cultural experience.

Rasmussen emphasized the significance of community engagement during this time of year, stating, “I find that people really respond, saying how much they appreciate a reason to come together and be creative at this time of year.” The festival not only celebrates artistic expression but also fosters connections among participants and attendees, enriching the local cultural landscape.

The Polka Dot Lantern Festival continues to be a beacon of creativity and community spirit in Nelson, offering a unique winter attraction that captivates both residents and visitors alike. As the event grows in popularity, it reinforces the importance of cultural celebrations in bringing people together, especially during the colder months.
