RCMP Lift Dangerous Persons Alert After Big Island Lake Shooting
UPDATE: Saskatchewan RCMP have just lifted a dangerous persons alert following a fatal shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation early this morning, which left one person dead and three others injured. Authorities are now focusing their efforts on identifying two suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.
During a press conference held earlier today, Insp. Ashley St. Germaine stated that the alert would only be lifted once police were confident the situation was safe. “We are actively monitoring the situation,” she emphasized, assuring the community of their commitment to safety. The alert was officially lifted at approximately 3:00 PM local time.
The police investigation remains ongoing. Currently, officials have no confirmed identities of the suspects but reported that they were seen traveling on an ATV around the time of the shooting. “We are continuing to investigate to try to narrow down who our suspects are and where they might be,” St. Germaine added, urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the deceased or provided further details on the condition of those injured. “At this time, we do not have specifics about the severity of the victims’ injuries or how many required hospital treatment,” St. Germaine mentioned, confirming that formal identification is underway.
In response to the incident, Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken charge of the investigation, with additional resources including forensic identification teams and provincial general investigation sections on standby. The proximity of the community to the Alberta border has also prompted notifications to Alberta RCMP, though no directions of travel or further incidents have been reported since the shooting.
The situation reportedly unfolded outdoors and appears limited to a single location. Investigators are working diligently to determine whether the shooting was targeted or random. St. Germaine clarified that nearby health facilities were not ordered to lock down by the RCMP; such decisions were made independently by other responding agencies.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, stay indoors, and avoid approaching any suspects. If anyone has information, they are encouraged to contact 911 or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers immediately.
As the investigation progresses, police have pledged to release any necessary information for public safety. The community is on alert, and updates regarding the alert status are available on the Sask Alert website.
The situation is developing, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for immediate updates on this urgent story.
